Mark Veldhuis and Maurits Kamman
Maurits (L) and Mark (R)
Mark and Maurits are old friends of HTT3, dating back to 2007 during a decade long partnership in collaboration between their school of Saint Canisius and School District 16. As teachers, Mark and Maurits teamed up with us to facilitate a Dutch-Canadian exchange experience which saw students not only getting to experience each country’s culture, but find the deeper connection between our countries: the events of the Second World War. Following the cancellation of the student exchange project, Mark and Maurits continue to work with us on a number of different initiatives. The latest collaboration took place on June 1st, 2019 in which they organized an intimate ceremony at Holten Canadian War Cemetery, where many North Shore Regiment soldiers are buried from fighting the battles to liberate the Netherlands. As well, they connected our students with a Holocaust survivor to hear first hand his account of the experience of being Jewish in occupied Holland. Mark and Maurits are very engaged with the Holten Canadian War Cemetery and are committed to promoting and enhancing the act of remembrance of those Canadians who lost their lives.
